My Life of Travels and Adventures: October 2010

Running?

20 October 2010

This afternoon I decided to give running/jogging a shot again.  This summer we have been riding bikes a lot and I have not used our treadmill too much, so today was a test run.

I started the C25K program back in the spring but never really made it past week 2.  I would get to discouraged and frustrated with myself and lack of ability to run for more than 90 seconds at a time.  After bootcamp this summer (and all the running she made us do) and loosing 40lbs, I decided to give running a try again.  My goal is to be able to run a 5K.  I should say that I am using the term run lightly... its more like a slow jog, but hey I am doing it.

So, today I set a plan to walk/run in 2.5 minute intervals for 30 minutes.  I walked the first 2.5 minutes, jogged the next 2.5, walked 1 minute and then ran for the next 6.5 minutes (1/2 mile).  I was feeling pretty good, but the hubby came home at this point, so I decided to stop for the night.  I am pretty proud of myself for that short little run I did.  My plan is to get up in the morning and run again...

Book - A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

19 October 2010

I read so many books that I forget what they are about, so I am hoping that by writing my review of the book it will help me keep track of the stories.
I recently finished A Long Way Gone; Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah.  I went into the book thinking it was going to be all about what he did as a boy while fighting in Sierra Leone.  This was part of the book, but it was also about his time before and after his time in the war.  He was 12 when he and his family fled the attacking rebels, 13 when he began fighting with the government army and 16 when he was removed from the fighting by UNICEF.  It is hard to imagine what he and the people of Sierra Leone went through.  Ishmael was fighting in this war while I was at home being a kid.  He is only 4 years older than I am.  Crazy!  However, in the end Ishmael learned to heal, forgive himself and move on.  His story was beautifully written.
